Aeration

Aeration is used to help relieve soil compaction and improve the lawns health, leading to a greener, more resilient lawn.

This is a process of creating small channels from the surface of the lawn down into the soil in order to let more air and water into the lawn root zone. This in turn helps beneficial microorganisms to thrive and helps grasses to absorb more nutrients and keep the lawn healthy and greener.

We use hollow tine aeration as it's the most effective aeration method. Using this method allows us to remove cores of soil (plugs). These cores can be then redistributed on the surface of the lawn and all the nutrients and beneficial microorganisms can be recycled back into the soil.

The results of using this method of aeration are:

  • excellent water percolation

  • improved surface drainage (reduced surface water runoff and puddling)

  • relieved soil compaction

  • stronger root development (new, deeper roots)

  • faster thatch breakdown (thatch is created by dead grass roots, stems and shoots)

  • denser lawn

  • better fertiliser absorption (your fertiliser is easily absorbed, which means you get better result for the money you invested in lawn care).

We use hollow tine aeration between April and September, when there is the right moisture in the soil (not too wet and not too dry) and the ground is not frozen. We aerate only when the soil is moist.

Aeration should be done every year. After aeration a top dressing may be applied to improve surface levels. If needed, this will be done at an additional cost.

Scarification

Scarification is used to help to create a healthier, denser lawn by removing excessive thatch build-up and moss.

This is a process of pruning the grasses shoots, stolons and rhizomes vertically. This stimulates their growth and creates more individual grass plants, thickening the lawn and making it more disease resistant. This also helps to thin out a natural layer of thatch (created by dead grass roots, stems and shoots). A layer of thatch that is too thick (over 1/2 inch), blocks the air, water and nutrients access, leading to shallow roots, risk of fungal diseases and thin or bare patches in a lawn (particularly in the dry summer months).

The results of scarification are:

  • stronger root development

  • improved water and air penetration

  • better nutrient uptake (greater amount of fertiliser is available for the grass roots)

  • relieved soil compaction

  • less puddles - better surface drainage

  • denser lawn

  • less spongy feel underfoot.

We use scarification in March to April and September to October when there is the right moisture in the soil and the ground is not frozen or bone dry.

After scarification your lawn will look a little messy but it will quickly recover and look much better than it was before the treatment.

Scarification should be done every year. Otherwise it's very hard to get the same result by scarifying lawn every 2-3 years. We then need to scarify aggressively and remove a lot of material, which may then necessitate additional overseeding and top-dressing treatment. If scarification is done every year you will be in much better control of the thatch and moss and enjoy a faster lawn recovery time too. Your lawn will look much improved in just a few weeks.

Feeding your lawn

Every time we mow and collect the clippings, we are stealing some nutrients away from the lawn. Feeding your lawn throughout the growing season is necessary.

To survive and thrive, your grass needs a proper amount of nutrients. The most important are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They are used by grasses in larger quantities. The ratio of these three elements changes at different times of the year, according to the different needs of grasses (driven by their growth cycles).

In spring and summer we use a high nitrogen fertiliser to help the lawn to recover from winter, thicken up and support grasses in their period of rapid growth. In autumn and winter we use fertilisers with a higher ratio of potassium to harden cell walls (to aid winter survival) and phosphorus to strengthen roots.

The roots of grasses absorb nutrients from the fertilisers, but first they need bacteria and other microorganisms in the soil to convert fertiliser into plant-absorbable form. That's why regular aeration to avoid compaction and to deliver more oxygen to microorganisms is so important. This way grasses are able to derive the full benefit of fertiliser and you get more effect for your invested money.

Normally we use conventional, synthetic, granular fertilisers as standard, however we can also offer application of organic fertilisers (which are slightly more expensive). They are derived from natural plant and animal materials and they provide a slow-release nutrient source that improves soil health (they feed soil microbes and improve soil structure). We can also use vegan-friendly, plant-based organic fertilisers if required.

If you want the lawn slightly greener for a special event, we can apply a liquid fertiliser which acts as a "top-up". This type of fertiliser is absorbed much more quickly. Visible greening and growth improvement often appears within a few days after application. This type of treatment is not part of our lawn care plan so please contact us if you will require this additional service. â€‹â€‹

Moss control

Moss control is moss prevention and removal. This includes chemical application and all the other treatments that we use in lawn care.

There is no chemical application that can kill a moss plant and its spores. Chemicals can only weaken the moss plant and help with its removal. The moss spores cannot be killed.

Moss can outcompete grasses and â€‹moss outgrowth in lawns can be a sign of underlying problems such as:

  • poor drainage

  • compacted soil

  • acidic soil - many moss species thrive in acidic environments

  • consistently damp soil surface

  • sparse grass areas caused by shade

  • bare patches of lawn where grass is regularly walked on.

If you don't maintain the lawn, new and remaining moss spores will soon fill up your lawn with new moss plants. That's why it's important to:

  • regularly aerate the lawn to improve surface drainage

  • scarify the lawn to remove loose moss and maintain a healthy thatch layer

  • feed the lawn at the right times with the right amount and ratio of nutrients

  • mow the lawn regularly and maintain the correct grass height (not too short).

Doing all these things will discourage the moss spores from germinating. It's a combination of everything needed to maintain a healthy grass. That's why a good maintenance programme is crucial.

We can apply "moss killer" (iron sulphate) to dry out the moss plants and make them much easier to rake or scarify out of the lawn. Spraying "moss killer" after scarification gives much better results. â€‹We use moss control applications after scarification, for better efficiency and better use of your money.

Alternatively, we can offer application of an organic, chemical-free, pets and wildlife-friendly moss remover (acts as a fertiliser as well). It uses bacteria to break down dead moss and turn it to additional nutrients for your lawn. It can be applied between March and October. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
